How seats work

A seat is an active engineer, counted from your repositories.

We count the humans who commit or open pull requests in your active, non-public repositories over the trailing 90 days. You never assign or revoke seats by hand; the count follows the work.

  • Bots and service accounts don't count.
  • Contributors seen only in public or external repositories don't count.
  • Deactivated repositories drop out of the count.
  • One person working across GitHub, GitLab, and Azure DevOps counts as one seat.
  • Your active-engineer roster is reviewable in-app, so you can see exactly who is counted.

What does a seat cost?
During open beta, new Team subscriptions pay $9 / active engineer / month for the first 12 months. List price after that is $19 / active engineer / month.
How long does the beta rate last?
The beta rate is available during open beta and holds for the first 12 months of your subscription. Once you subscribe, your exact reversion date is shown on your billing page.
What if our active-engineer count changes mid-month?
Your billing page shows the latest active-engineer snapshot estimate. Your invoice uses the billing-period seat quantity synced to Stripe, so the estimate can differ before final invoicing.
Do contractors or bots count toward seats?
Contractors count if they are billable humans working in active, non-public repositories. Bots, service accounts, and contributors seen only in public or external repositories are excluded.
Which tools does Backlight support today?
AI coding tools: GitHub Copilot and Cursor, with Claude Code and OpenAI in beta. Source control: GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, and Azure DevOps. Issue trackers: Jira, Linear, and GitHub Issues.
What does Backlight access?
Commit and pull request metadata from your source control, issues from your tracker, and seat, usage, and spend data from your AI tool vendors. We never store source code or diffs. Every permission we request is listed on the Security and data page.
Does our data go to an LLM?
On the Free plan, no. On Team and Enterprise, Backlight sends metadata such as line counts, timestamps, and bug titles to an external LLM provider for classification. Source code and diffs are never sent. This is on by default. An owner can turn it off, or opt in to also sending redacted commit messages, pull request titles, and bug descriptions, under Settings, Data & Privacy.
How does setup work?
Create an account and name your workspace. Install the Backlight GitHub App and choose repositories, or connect Bitbucket, GitLab, or Azure DevOps from Settings. Connect Jira, Linear, or GitHub Issues. Add admin API keys for Cursor, Claude Code, or OpenAI; GitHub Copilot data comes through the GitHub App. Then invite your team.
What if a Free organization has more than 10 active engineers?
Free covers up to 10 active engineers. Larger teams need the Team plan, which covers up to 250.
How long do you keep our data, and how do we delete it?
How long we keep each kind of data is listed on the Security and data page. An owner can export your data or delete the organization under Settings, Data & Privacy. Deleting disconnects integrations right away, and your data is permanently deleted after 30 days.
